Course structure
Fashion is a domain in which the various disciplines closely cooperate with each other. Although you will graduate within a degree programme, it goes without saying that you must also be familiar with the other disciplines. During the first year you will therefore have many subjects that are important for all specialisations.
Foundation Year
AMFI's foundation year consists of two semesters whose content is shaped by the theme: 'Is the fashion world right for me, and am I right for the fashion world?' The first foundation semester focuses on giving you insight into the basic knowledge and skills you will later need as a professional. In Workshops you make professional products: a Style Book, an Inspiration Book and a Prototype. In Toolshops you learn how to make these products. The foundation year is about hands-on work, but also about developing a personal vision of the world of fashion.
The Theoretical Backbone uses lectures, talks and films to convey information about the diverse contexts of the fashion industry. Each semester concludes with an assessment of your personal portfolio which shows what kind of knowledge and skills you have acquired so far. In the second semester of the first year, you will focus mainly on your own specialisation
Second Year
The second year of the programme has the theme: 'What does the fashion industry expect of me, and what can I expect from the fashion industry?' In all three graduation variants, the programme focuses on quality and quantity. For instance, the third semester looks at the important jeans market, while halfway through the year all three departments work jointly for three weeks on the Triptych project in which you examine the influence of social and economic developments on the fashion world.
Third and Fourth Year
In the third or fourth year of the programme you carry out a six-month work internship. The AMFI maintains numerous excellent contacts with the Dutch business community, but you are naturally at liberty to seek your own internship host and location, whether this is in the Netherlands or abroad. You also follow a minor programme and a specialization programme each lasting one semester. These are study programmes which allow you to deepen and broaden your studies. You can do the minor at the AMFI, but if you prefer you can also do it another Dutch hogeschool or university, provided there is a demonstrable relationship with the study of design, branding or management.
Graduation Phase
The final semester is devoted to your graduation project. For Fashion & Management and Fashion & Branding, this means either a company assignment or a research subject of your own choosing that is relevant to the fashion world. For Fashion & Design you develop a catwalk collection or draw up a trend forecast and write a thesis about it.
