To go abroad is always an eye opening experience. Before going I knew that I was about to taste real Dutch Stroopwafels, and probably see a lot of orange, the national color of the Netherlands, in some occasions, and that I would be surprised about how many cyclists there could be in Amsterdam. Now, while living in Amsterdam, I can honestly say, that I love the Stroopwafels and that I will probably never learn to cycle like a real “Amsterdammer”. In Amsterdam the cyclists have the control, their unwritten rules is to be followed if you want a safe trip around the city. It is surprising in what ways people can ride their bicycles through the streets, made of cobblestones, while having children and bags on the bike and even eating an apple at the same time. It is kind of cool!
Another Dutch experience of studying in Amsterdam is the tolerance, courtesy and kindness of the people living here. It is easy to get help if you need any and the Dutch people are very good at English. I feel like I am as welcome as a native “Amsterdammer”. Also, the city is very student-friendly. There are many events for exchange students during a week. Personally I like the Borrels where we socialize while drinking cheap beers.
Studying in Amsterdam is definitely an experience. The city is fun, crazy, charming and unique,it is worth a visit!
