School of Education
The School of Education at Hogeschool van Amsterdam offers a variety of programmes in the field of teacher education and pedagogics. The School has a prominent role in a wide range of educational innovations that are carried out in close cooperation with schools and other educational institutions. The SoE has almost 4000 students and circa 200 staff members (FTE).
The SoE is a faculty of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA), the largest university of applied sciences in Amsterdam. The HvA delivers bachelor’s programmes in Business Studies, Communication, Education, Fashion, Health, IT, Law, Social Work, and Technology.
The SoE in society
The multicultural and international atmosphere of Amsterdam is an integral part of teaching and learning at the SoE. Although Amsterdam has fewer than a million inhabitants, it is confronted with all the social issues that international and multicultural capitals face in today’s Europe. The SoE feels responsible for helping to address these issues. The curriculum at the SoE provides both Dutch students and visiting international students with an international outlook on teaching in a changing society. The School aims to educate its students to become responsible citizens who contribute to democratic society. The SoE has a strong focus on urban education and maintains close ties with educational partners and the city of Amsterdam.
In cooperation with housing corporations and neighbourhood councils, the SoE founded the City Academy to provide students with an opportunity to ‘learn from the city’ by participating in social projects. Examples are coaching pupils or assisting in setting up a multifunctional centre in an area with a high percentage of immigrants. SoE students have also been involved in projects to address cyber harassment at schools. The Computerkids municipal project gives computers to children from low-income families, after they have been trained in computer use. The SoE provides this training. As global citizens, teachers are a part of the international world of education. As such, they have a responsibility towards education in regions that may benefit from their expertise. The SoE encourages students to actively contribute to improving quality and accessibility of education. The School of Education is a UNESCO-school. SoE works with Institut pour l’Education Populaire du Mali (IEP) to implement competence based (teacher) education in that country. SoE supports IEP in the development of innovative education and in efforts to increase accessibility to education for all groups in society.
