School of Sports and Nutrition: Inspiring, Vital and Professional
These three educational programmes with around 2000 students - are some of the crown jewels of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. The three related, but also different educational programmes are connected to each other through two elements: quality and culture. The Department of School of Sports and Nutrition, which has a history of more than eighty years, is standing in the middle of the present society and always anticipates well on the quick developments in the field of profession. The educational programme of School of Sports and Nutrition started in 2002 and has been receiving a lot of attention since then. The third educational programme is Nutrition and Dietetics, which almost covers the whole spectrum of nutrition programmes: from dietetics to food management. Since two years Nutrition and Dietetics has been number one on the list of comparable educational programmes in the Netherlands.
Dynamic and original ambience
The programmes are characterized by its own dynamic and original ambience, which you can already feel when you are approaching the accommodation on the Dr. Meurerlaan, which opened in May 2005. It breaths activity, health, guts and enthusiasm - inside and outside of the building. People are sporting extensively and wherever you look you will see students working - alone or in groups. Everything is aimed at achieving record performances. The fitness centre Splash, which is connected to the building, attracts students and local residents (young and old), who can meet each other there and who can work together on their health and shape in a relaxed sphere.
Students here have been satisfied for many years, their studies have been assessed the best of all faculties of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam since 1999. Alumni and drop outs too give a positive judgment about the educational programmes, the teachers and the ambience. The programmes are well organized, there are many contact hours and numerous extra-curricular activities like project weeks and a flourishing student union. And according to the various national and international benchmarks the three educational programmes Physical Education, Sportsmanagement and Nutrition are doing very well.
Expertisecentrum Sport & Gezondheid (ESG)
Resource and Training Centre for Health and Fitness
The Resource and Training Centre for Health and Fitness (ESG) was founded in 1997 as a means to develop and update the curriculum of physical education through research, case studies and feedback from the field. Another part of it's mission is to educate alumni or people who are already active in the field of physical education, sportsmanagement and nutrition on the latest theoretical or practical developments in their line of work. Nowadays the ESG offers over 25 post graduate courses. The ESG is also hosting and creating sports related events and is currently involved in organizing the 17th EASM student seminar in september 2009.
Relations with the field of profession
The way in which these educational programmes are using their relations with the field of profession for the benefit of its educational programmes is appreciated everywhere. These relations are used via YBBP (Sports in Business), Advisory Councils of the Field of Profession, kenniskring (a group of people who exchange knowledge around a certain topic on a regular basis), participation in a consultation with the food industry in the Northern part of the Netherlands (Albert Heijn et al) and of course via the Volleyball team of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, who plays in the higher regions of our national competition. This team has emerged from a talent development project which has been set up in cooperation with the NeVoBo (Dutch Volleyball Federation). We also offer the highest trainer/coach education possible in the Netherlands, which is a cooperation with the Hanze Hogeschool Groningen and the Dutch Olympic Committee.
We're also very active in our direct surroundings: Amsterdam West. There is a collaboration with the Stichting Openbaar Basisonderwijs Westelijke Tuinsteden (a foundation of sixteen primary schools with a total of six thousand pupils). We work together with the Medical Centre of VU University to fight obesity among children and to promote an active lifestyle. Target group projects, like Sport West and Gym City, have been started to stimulate children and young people to exercise. Obviously, fitness centre Splash is used for these projects.
To encourage the intake of students from intermediate vocational education, we have made agreements with the CIOS in Haarlem and ROC schools in Amsterdam and in the middle of The Netherlands. Students who want to move on to University after they have received their Bachelor's degree can use agreements that have been made between School of Sports and Nutrition and VU University, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Utrecht.
Students have a lot of possibilities to gain more in-depth knowledge about specific subjects, like education for children with special needs, health and life-style or internationalization. They can gain this knowledge by following a minor, like for example 'Sport as a global language'.
In short, School of Sports and Nutrition are fantastic: they are highly appreciated inside and outside of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, they have satifisfied students and employees and they have a modern style to be proud of. Therefore they invite interested people to become acquainted with the inspiring world of movement, sports and nutrtition.
