Tuition fees
In order to take part in a study programme, you will be required to pay a tuition fee. Tuition fees for government-subsidised study programmes are fixed on an annual basis by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. This is the statutory tuition fee. If you meet the requirements applied by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, you will be required to pay the statutory tuition fee. If you do not meet these requirements, you must pay the institutional tuition fee.

Other EU/EEA countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Lichtenstein and the United Kingdom. People with a type II, III or IV residence permit (and in some cases type I), or those whose tuition fees are paid by UAF, are also eligible.
Place of residence
In September of the academic year in which your study programmes starts you must live and be officially (GBA) registered in a municipality in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg or in one of the following German states: North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen or Lower Saxony. More information on GBA registration in the Netherlands can be found on our website at: Registration Municipality
No prior degree
In order to qualify for statutory tuition fees, you must not have obtained (since 1991) a prior degree in the Netherlands of the same level as the programme that you wish to study (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree). If you wish to study a programme in the field of education or health care, you may not already have obtained another Bachelor’s degree in either of these fields in order to qualify for statutory tuition fees. If you have a Bachelor’s degree in another field (e.g. Economics), then you may qualify for statutory tuition fees.
Initial enrolment
You only pay tuition fees for your first programme. If you enrol in two or more programmes, you only pay the highest amount.
Exceptions to the institutional tuition fee rates
The tuition fees for the non-EU/EEA students increased significantly in the 2008-2009 academic year, as a result of the withdrawal of the government subsidy for this group. Students who enrolled in their study programme prior to the 2007-2008 academic year (and have been enrolled at the AUAS/HvA for an uninterrupted period) are eligible to apply for the transitional regulation. This transitional tuition fee is €3,250 for the 2011-2012 academic year.
A transitional tuition fee of €6,933 also applies to current non-EU/EEA students who started between 1 September 2008 and 1 September 2010 (both dates included). Current students who have already obtained a Dutch degree are also eligible for a transitional rate. Students who started a programme either during or prior to the 2010-2011 academic year (and did not stop at any stage) pay a transitional fee of €3,515 in the 2011-2012 academic year.
Students completing two degrees at once who started in 2010-2011 or earlier may finish their second degree after completing the first one at institutional rates equal to the statutory tuition fee. This fee is €1,713 for the 2011/2012 academic year.
Naturalisation
Students who become naturalised citizens of the Netherlands (or another EU/EEA nationality) during the course of the academic year pay the institutional fee until the time of their naturalisation, and after that (from the start of the subsequent month) the statutory rate.
Long-term students
For possible increases to tuition fees as a result of the fine for long-term students, please refer to the information provided by DUO.
If you would like to know how much you need to pay in your personal situation but find it difficult to calculate with accuracy, feel free to contact the Central Student Administration (CSA).
Payment of tuition fees
There are a number of ways in which you can pay your tuition fees.
Payment in a lump sum
You can pay your tuition fees in a lump sum by sending a transfer form to the bank or by transferring the relevant sum via online banking. You can find the bank account number and necessary codes under account details (see bottom page). Make sure to state your student number and/or debit number in the description field.
Paying by debit card
You can pay the entire tuition fee sum by debit card at the following locations: Weesperzijde and Fraijlemaborg
You can find the opening hours and route descriptions for these locations on our website at: AUAS/HvA locations
Authorisation form for payment in a lump sum
In the email that you will receive from the Central Student Administration, you will find a digital authorisation form as an attachment. You can use this form to indicate that you would like the tuition fee sum to be deducted from your bank account in a lump sum. The deduction will take place by the end of September.
You can return the completed, printed and signed forms to us or hand them in at the student service centre or the student administration department at one of the AUAS/HvA locations. We recommend that you save a copy of the authorisation form for your own records.
Note: Read the payment conditions at the bottom of this page before signing the form!
Payment from abroad
You can also transfer the tuition fees from a foreign bank account. You can find the relevant bank account numbers and required codes in bank account details (see bottom page). The transaction costs that the bank charges for international transfers are borne by the person paying the tuition fees.
Payment by your employer
If an employer is paying the tuition fees, the employer will often want an invoice made out in the name of the company. In the case of large companies, transactions can take longer to process. To ensure that the employer is able to receive an invoice made out in the name of the company and the student can be registered immediately, we require a payment guarantee. This guarantee constitutes an agreement between the employer and the student on the payment of the tuition fees. As soon as we have received the guarantee, the student will be enrolled and the employer will be sent an invoice. You can download an example of a payment guarantee and the appropriate instructions here.

Payment in instalments
Authorisation form for payment in instalments
If you wish to pay your tuition fees in instalments, use the authorisation form contained in the email from the Central Student Administration, on which you can indicate your preference to pay the sum due in instalments. Payment in instalment is subject to an administration fee of € 24.
You can return the completed, printed and signed forms to us or hand them in to the student service centre or the student administration department at one of the AUAS/HvA locations. We recommend that you save a copy of the authorisation form for your own records. The date on which the authorisation form is signed will be viewed as the payment date.
Note: Read the payment conditions at the bottom of this page before signing the form!
Paying on time and your responsibilities
Payment conditions
- If you choose to pay using the authorisation form, send the form to Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences, attn. Central Student Administration, Antwoordnummer 47636, 1070 VD Amsterdam.
- You must ensure your bank balance is sufficient to cover the payment.
- You cannot use a foreign bank account or a savings account.
- You cannot reverse an instalment payment.
- The authorisation cannot be cancelled prematurely.
- You may not prematurely close the bank account.
- In the event the direct-debit transfer of an instalment fails, that instalment will be deducted simultaneously with the subsequent instalment.
- If you are not in agreement with the direct-debit transfers, get in touch with the AUAS/HvA.
- If the tuition fees cannot be collected or if an arrears in payment arises, the enrolment may be refused or revoked as provided for in Article 3.5 of the Student Charter, which you can find at: legal-affairs. In that case, you may no longer attend classes, take exams or be awarded a certificate. You will also be liable to pay any collection costs. Note: this does NOT mean that the tuition fees will no longer be payable!
By enrolling in a study programme at the AUAS/HvA, you consent to the payment conditions. For more detailed information, visit the site of the Financial Administration department. On this page you will also find the dates on which the instalments are collected.
Final payment date
The new academic year begins on 1 September. The final payment date is therefore also 1 September for those wishing to study in the academic year that commences on that date. If you have submitted an authorisation form or employer’s guarantee, the date on which the document was signed will be viewed as the payment date. If you paid in a lump sum, the transaction date will apply as the date of payment. If your initial payment was too little and you paid the remainder owing at a later date, that later date will apply as the payment date.
If your payment date is after 1 September, you may only enrol with the explicit permission of the programme manager. In other words, paying after 1 September will not result in automatic enrolment.
If you do not pay
Your enrolment will be jeopardised if the AUAS/HvA is unable to collect the money owed from your bank account. Late payment may also result in your being denied access to the AUAS/HvA network. If we are forced to cancel your enrolment owing to non-payment and you are receiving student financial assistance and the Public Transport (OV) card these will also be cancelled.
